That's pretty much the way it goes. The basic vision test is done by the


technician before dilating your eyes. Sometimes the doctor wants to repeat that - maybe it depends on the office. Realistically, much the routine vision test can be probably be completed by the technician. Clicking thru the "better/worse" thing is to fine tune your prescription, identify any astigmatism, etc.

The benefit of the doctor is the "medical" exam portion - they'll check for cataracts, etc. The reason for dilating your eyes is so they can examine all the blood vessels on your retina and optic nerve health.

If you'll be driving yourself home, I'd plan on an appointment early enough so you can drive home in daylight.
